A Kentucky summer finds every weakness an air conditioner has. When a system quits in July, the useful question is not whether someone can come — it is what they will actually check when they do, and whether the visit produces a diagnosis or just a top-up.

What a real service call covers

A technician doing the job properly works the whole loop: static pressures and temperature split across the coil, refrigerant charge measured rather than assumed, the condenser coil outside checked for the cottonwood and grass clippings that blanket it by midsummer, the capacitor and contactor that fail more than any other electrical parts, and the condensate line that backs up in Ohio Valley humidity. Ten minutes of measurement separates a system that needs a forty-dollar part from one that is losing its charge.

The distinction that matters most is between repairing and refilling. Refrigerant does not get used up — a system low on charge has a leak, and topping it up without finding the leak sells the same visit again next summer. On older units running phased-out refrigerant, that conversation changes honestly into a replacement conversation, because the refill itself can approach the value of the equipment.

Repair or replace, without the sales pitch

The arithmetic is not complicated. A young system with a failed capacitor, fan motor or contactor is a repair — those are wear parts. A compressor or coil failure on a system past its twelfth Kentucky summer is a different case: the repair is a large fraction of a new unit, on equipment whose other components have the same years on them. And a system that limps through every July while the power bill climbs is telling you where it is headed regardless of what fails next.

What protects you either way is a written finding: what failed, what was measured, what the repair costs, and what the technician would do if it were their own house. A visit that ends with a number but no findings is a quote, not a diagnosis — and it makes the second opinion, which is always available, impossible to compare.

Why does an AC quit on the hottest day of the year?
Because heat is load. Marginal components — a weak capacitor, a dirty condenser coil, a low charge — all survive mild days and fail when the system runs flat out. The hottest week of a Kentucky summer is a stress test everything marginal fails at once.
Is refilling refrigerant a repair?
No. Refrigerant circulates in a sealed loop and does not get consumed — a low system has a leak. A refill without a leak search buys one season at most, and on phased-out refrigerants it is expensive enough to change the repair-or-replace arithmetic.
