Short cycling

Every start is the hardest moment of a system’s life: the inrush on the compressor, the stress on the ignitor, the temperature swing through the heat exchanger. A healthy system starts a few times an hour. One that starts every few minutes is paying its whole wear budget just turning itself on.

What makes a system stutter

The thermostat gets blamed first and is guilty last. The usual culprits sit deeper: a system oversized for the house, which hits its setpoint in minutes and shuts down before the air has mixed; a furnace overheating on starved airflow and tripping its own limit switch; an AC icing its coil and cutting out on low pressure; a heat pump losing charge. Each produces the same visible symptom — short bursts of running — from a different disease, which is why the fix chosen off the symptom alone is usually the wrong one.

The costs compound quietly. Parts wear by the start, not by the hour, so a short-cycling system ages at several times its calendar rate. Comfort goes next: rooms far from the thermostat never get their share of a cycle that short. And the bills climb, because the least efficient minute of any cycle is the first one — a system that only runs first-minutes runs expensive.

Reading it honestly

The homeowner’s part of the diagnosis is observation: how long does a cycle last, does the outdoor unit start and stop with it, does it happen in both seasons or one. Those three answers cut the possibilities in half before anyone opens a panel. A technician’s part is measurement — temperature rise, static pressure, charge — because the difference between an oversized system and a choked one is invisible to the eye.
