The clammy house

There is a particular misery this region knows well: a house at seventy-two degrees that still feels like a basement. Cold and damp at once. It reads like weak equipment, and its usual cause is the opposite — an air conditioner too big for the house it serves.

Two jobs, one machine

An air conditioner drying a house is a slower process than cooling it. Moisture only condenses out of the air while air is flowing over a cold coil — which means the drying happens by the minute of runtime. A right-sized system runs long, comfortable cycles and wrings the Ohio Valley’s moisture out as it goes. An oversized one slams the temperature down in minutes and shuts off before the drying ever gets underway — then the humidity creeps back while the machine rests.

The result is thermostat wars nobody wins: the house feels sticky, so the setpoint drops; the air gets colder but no drier, so it feels clammy instead of fresh; and the bills reflect a machine bought oversize and run overtime. Meanwhile the walls and windows in a tightly cooled damp house give condensation somewhere to sit.

What actually fixes it

If the system is being replaced anyway, the fix is free: a real load calculation and the discipline to buy the size it names. This is the quote line worth interrogating hardest in this climate, because rounding up « to be safe » is precisely the mistake — in Kentucky humidity, the safety margin IS the problem.

If the system is staying, there are honest half-measures: running the fan on auto rather than on (continuous fan re-evaporates the moisture off the wet coil straight back into the house), slowing an adjustable blower toward the drying end of its range, and — for houses that stay damp regardless — a dedicated dehumidifier doing the second job separately. What never fixes it is a colder setpoint.
